L House is envisioned as a meeting point between nature and glamour – a contemporary villa with a quietly luxurious presence and a humble relationship to its surroundings. Set on a hillside facing a cosy harbor in the inner Stockholm archipelago, the house takes full advantage of its dramatic site. A key gesture is the living room volume, which projects out from the main body of the house on slender pillars, hovering above the slope so that shrubs and branches can grow freely beneath. From inside, the effect is one of floating in mid-air, suspended among the treetops with the harbor as a constant backdrop.
Throughout the project, there is a deliberate dialogue between weight and lightness. The base of the house is anchored by a basement level clad in Swiss Vals stone, a nod to the client’s heritage. At the centre of this stone plinth, an opening is carved out to accommodate a tree that is intended to grow from the basement up through the core of the house, physically stitching together the different levels and reinforcing the connection to the landscape. Above, the upper floor reads as a lighter, more refined volume, wrapped in brushed shou sugi-ban charred wood panelling that highlights the richness of the grain and lends a subtle, tactile depth to the façade.
Approach and privacy are handled with particular care. The street-facing side is intentionally reserved without feeling forbidding, defined by a series of high windows that prevent direct views into the interior while offering glimpses of the exposed-beam ceilings within. At night, these ceilings glow softly, turning the house into a warm lantern on the hillside and hinting at the tailored, atmospheric world beyond.
